Guide for Newcomers: Zurich

Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and economic hub, home to over 440,000 residents — roughly 32% of whom are foreign nationals. The canton offers one of the world's highest standards of living, a strong job market spanning finance, technology, and pharmaceuticals, and an efficient public-service infrastructure. Housing competition is intense, especially in the city proper, and registering within 14 days of arrival is a legal requirement.

First Steps After Arrival

After moving to Zurich, you must register at your local Personenmeldeamt within 14 days. The City of Zurich operates three main offices: Stadthaus (city centre), Oerlikon (north), and Schwamendingen (north-east). If you live in a suburban municipality such as Winterthur, Uster, or Dietikon, register at the local Einwohnerkontrolle instead.
